Ian Murray was born on 10 August in Edinburgh, to a cooper father and shop assistant mother.

He was brought up in the Wester Hailes area of Edinburgh, where he attended Dumbryden Primary School,^[1] then Wester Hailes Education Centre. Murray read Social Policy and Law at the University of Edinburgh graduating with an M.A.
